Community Guidlines and ToS...

Welcome to the HughesNet Community Forum!

The HughesNet Community is here for you to search for answers and ask fellow HughesNet subscribers for help. This is a great opportunity to discuss and exchange information to enhance your HughesNet experience. Here are guidelines to keep the community constructive and friendly for all. You can also check our comprehensive rules in the Terms of Service.

Please do:

1. Practice internet etiquette

To provide the best community experience, please refrain from using ALL CAPS, “bumping” topics (this is commonly done by posting on an old thread to move it back to the top of the list), harassing other customers or using topic titles that are not directly related to your post. Just be respectful. Smiley Happy

2. Stay on topic

Every customer here wants clear and straight-forward assistance. Please be courteous to other customers by staying on topic and contributing constructive replies.

3. When in doubt, start your own topic

The best way to attract attention to your question is to start your own topic instead of posting inside of another customer’s individual topic. Of course, if you’re experiencing the very same conditions as the poster in the thread, join in!
This could be an issue if someone is experiencing speed concerns and others actually read this, they may jump into any and every speed concerned topic and not have the same actual issue...  Maybe clarify better?

4. Summarize your concern

Use a subject line that summarizes your concern. This helps others understand what you’re experiencing faster, and makes it easier for other customers with the same concern to find your topic. Good examples are: “I can't access Facebook”, or “I’m unable to send e-mail with Outlook”.

5. Provide relevant details

Include relevant details about your concern in your post. Helpful things like what operating system and web browser you are using go a long way. Even better things to add are details such as when you first started experiencing the problem, and what you have done so far to troubleshoot.

6. Protect your privacy and others'

Avoid posting anything you wouldn't want on a billboard. Yours or anyone's HughesNet account number, physical or mailing address, telephone number, credit card numbers or e-mail address are not to be shared publicly for safety and privacy reasons.

For a safer and more enjoyable Community, it's best to avoid:

1. Using profanity

Although we do have an automatic filter for inappropriate words, avoiding the filters by purposely misspelling or disguising profanity will possibly result in your post being removed.  Maybe we should have a strike system mentioned for violating this, even though **bleep** takes the place of caught phrases.  It will probably become tiresome to see *bleep* a dozen times in each individual post!

2. Trolling, spamming, soliciting, or insulting others

Our goal is to provide a safe, welcoming environment for everyone. Continuously posting the same thing repeatedly, ‘trolling’ (posting rude, offensive content or disrupting a topic for the sole intention of upsetting another user) or otherwise posting inflammatory content is not tolerated. Soliciting others to engage in legal action or for advertising is also not accepted.

Maybe expand on the last line, "Soliciting others....legal action or for advertising"

Final Notes

Other community members like you are providing most of the advice here, and it is your responsibilty to exercise careful judgement in taking action based on said advice. HughesNet is not responsible for third-party content provided by other community members, nor is HughesNet responsible for any damage caused by said third-party content.

HughesNet moderators may take additional action as needed to maintain a safe and welcoming environment for our members.

You further agree and warrant that you shall not submit any content that:

  • Contains prices, advertisements, solicitations for goods or services or references to other products, offers, websites or competitors; (this may be an issue, as sometimes people ask for recomendations on hardware and prices for networking hardware... I can't think the amount of times someone has given a budget for a router and we gave recomendations based on that alone)
  • Solicits action for invitations including charitable contributions, lotteries, class-action lawsuits, formal complaints, etc.;
  • Contains links to irrelevant websites;

You will cooperate as fully as reasonably required in the defense of any claim.

For any content that you submit, you hereby grant to Hughes  a worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, fully sub-licensable, royalty-free and transferable right and license to use, reproduce, copy, modify, compress, delete in its entirety, adapt, publish, translate, communicate, publicly perform, publicly display, create derivative works from and/or sell and/or distribute such content and/or incorporate such content into any form, medium or technology now known or later developed without compensation to you.

All content that you submit may be used at Hughes' sole discretion. You acknowledge and agree that any content that you submit and your user name will be treated as non-confidential and non-proprietary.  Hughes may access or preserve your submissions to comply with legal process in the US or foreign jurisdictions, ensure compliance with these Terms, or protect ourselves, our customers or the public.  Hughes does not guarantee that you will have any recourse to edit or delete any content you have submitted.  Hughes may, at any time, without notice or liability to you, remove or refuse to post any submission, in whole or in part, that we decide in our sole discretion is unacceptable, undesirable or in violation of any law, these Terms or any other Condition. Everyone is encouraged to give feedback, the more feedback the better!  Hughesnet wants as many opinions/comments as possible regarding EVERYTHING possible, that includes the guidelines and terms of service!

One thing I would like to see is another feature more for moderators than us, is an "Infraction" based system, from time to time we may break the rules but be semi-justified, would it be too difficult to have such a system in place where we reach X infractions over a rolling time period and are barred temporarily instead of permenantly, but if we hit too many in a larger time period, be permenantly banned?  Other forums use this system so that we are docked once or twice and given a heads up, a third time results in a "time out" session, and further infractions that occur too soon result in removal of forum access.

Hi C0RR0SIVE!

You're correct, and we LOVE that you've gone through our guidelines and ToS. This is great feedback. We'll bring these up with our community manager.

I do know that our guidelines were designed to be simple and more user friendly, and that the ToS is supposed to be the comprehensive, legal rules that cover everything. Whatever isn't addressed in the guidelines should be in the ToS. We are going to aim for enforcing these guidelines and ToS to keep the peace and maintain a welcoming atmosphere.

This new platform does offer temporary bans so we do have that ability to put folks in time out if needed. 🙂

Thanks,
Liz

Can we add in somewhere that users shouldn't be encouraging users to ignore other users/groups?  Rather dislike a disgruntled customer (Curtis being the most recent) telling other customers to ignore anyone but him and Hughesnet Reps. -.-

It's part of being a good community member not to persuade people to ignore others when others may have valuable information.

I'll second that.  There is no reason someone should be basically sabotaging someone else's attempt at receiving help.  Said person seems to be doing this often lately.
